Peace rally held in Catbalogan City, urge local government to support peace talks

Farmers from Western Samar towns gathered today in a Peace Rally assembled in front of the Samar Provincial Capitol to urge the provincial government under Governor Sharee Ann Tan to cause the withdrawal of Army troops still encamped in several farmers communities in the province.

Peasant leaders from Hinabangan, Pinabacdao, Basey, and Calbiga said that troops under the 8th Infantry Division (ID) did not actually “pull-out” from villages and continued acts of harassments against farmers said to be “supporting rebels” despite President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of a unilateral ceasefire.

The farmers also urge Governor Tan to expressly support the peace talks between the National Democratic Front (NDF) and the Philippine Government (GRP). The Peace Rally was attended by at least 1000 farmers led by the Kapunungan han Gudti nga Parag-uma ha Weste han Samar (KAPAWA) and People Surge Western Samar Provincial Formation.
